Our May Workshop is for our Pastel Artists, or those that wish to try Pastels out is with Greg Hansell, FRAS.
The Program
- Greg will talk initially about the materials we are using, then we will sketch and paint a still life indoors. After lunch, weather permitting, we will plein air pastel paint near the venue, then show and share with constructive chat. If weather doesn’t permit, we shall stay indoors with a more elaborate still life.
Materials
- Pastels;- 40 to 60 round dry pastels, the more you pay the better the quality, Schmincke, Unison and many others are very good, but try not to go too cheap as they do not layer very well.Paper;-Canson pastel paper or colour fix, any colour but not too dark and not too light in tone
4 sheets any where from A3 or larger with clips and backboardPencil;-
Conte’ 1710HB is very good but most charcoal pencils are ok, dont use graphite.
White eraser, craft knife or sharpener, workable fixitave, apron hat etc
Artist
- About GregGreg is a well known pastel painter based at Windsor. His work has been showcased in more than 40 solo exhibitions, including a retrospective at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in 2009. Greg was commissioned in 2001 to paint three major pastel works for Western Sydney University. He has been a finalist 20 times in the Archibald and Wynne Prize, twice in the Salon des Refuses, 3 times in the Dobell Prize for Drawing. Greg has won awards inclduing the Mosman Art Prize twice (1984 and 1990) and the Royual Art Society of NSW Medial of Distinction in 2004 and 2005.Greg runs courses on pastel painting in his studio in Windsor, as well as teaching at the Royal Art Society of NSW in Sydney, where he is Art School Director.
