Our 18th August Workshop was run by our fellow KAS member, Kobie Bosh.
All delegates had a wonderful day as Kobie led us through the wonders of drawing with pen and ink and then applying a wash… the following pictures demonstrate some amazing results !!

Line in Interiors – taking a line for a waltz, wiggle and a walk.
Hi Everyone, I am so absolutely thrilled and pumped to be doing the workshop with you!
Our aim is to start finish a pen drawing/painting in one mighty go on one day.
Here is what you need to bring:
Paper:
300 gsm, size A3
We will use water when we the wash the colour on, therefore we need paper that will resist the buckle!
The smoothness/roughness of the paper really depends on you – I personally like a medium tooth because it gives enough texture for the watercolour to bleed into.
Fine line pens:
I use the brand Artliners, but anything along those lines are good. Just make sure the pens are water resistant. It is a good idea to have, maybe three different points, e.g. 0.1, 0.5, 0.8. Just as long as you a very fine point, a medium one and a thicker one.
Watercolours:
Bring what you have, as well as some brushes, water containers and paper towel.
(Watercolour pencils/Inktense pencils if you have them can be very handy. They are not however essential.)
Inspiration:
This is really an essential bit. We will focus on interiors, and especially different textures and surfaces. I tend to focus on an ensemble of maybe two, three objects- one being the “main focus”. For example, a chair standing on four fabulous French legs, with a cushion or chook sitting snugly on top, maybe a carpet resting at the chair’s feet. Or you could focus on a cupboard, some drawers hanging open with pieces of knick-knacks spilling out. Another interesting ensemble could be a study: a table loaded with interesting bits and pieces: maybe a typewriter, some books, a soft throw, some feathers in a pot. You are really looking for one picture that contains something soft, hard, round, sharp, smooth, bumpy, blocky, curvy, ……
Light plays a very important role, therefore an image with clear lighting from one side works like a dream.
You can source these images from anywhere – internet/magazines/your own photos-but please bring as hard copy of them to the workshop, black and white will be fine, then we can be free with colour ;-).
It would be immensely helpful if you could have the image lightly drawn in with pencil on the paper beforehand. No need to do any shading, just a light outline , we will add the drama with our pens and water colour. This will save time so that we can get straight into the business of drawing with the pens.

Biography:
Kobie’s work have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in South Africa and Australia. Her work has received many awards, including highly commended for drawing in the Waverley art prize (2016) and Hunter’s Hill art exhibition (2017). She owns and runs the art studio, “The Blue Door Art Studio” on the Sydney North Shore.
