Our guest speaker at the 4th May Meeting is Dr. Kathleen Hanna.
Dr. Kathleen Hanna is a botanical illustrator and author from Berowra Heights, a quiet suburb surrounded by the Aussie bush. A versatile artist, Kathleen has practiced in all mediums throughout her professional career, which began at the age of 17 in Adelaide, South Australia, working for the ABC News as a courtroom sketch artist.
Kathleen prefers to use traditional watercolour techniques for her botanical illustrations, which were meticulously painted from specimens collected from Muogamarra Nature Reserve and the Berowra area. The collection can be seen within her illustrated handbook titled ‘Wildflowers of Muogamarra Nature Reserve: An artist’s collection of flowering plants and where to find them’. Kathleen’s book, published in 2019, was launched during the spring open season at Muogamarra Nature Reserve and formed part of her PhD Thesis in Natural History Illustration.
Kathleen enjoys creating exclusive field drawing and botanical painting workshops at Muogamarra, where students can create their own botanical paintings from specimens collected within the reserve.
Kathleen is currently working on illustrations depicting the banksias found at Muogamarra Nature Reserve and local landscape paintings with oils.
