Description
Do you want to sharpen your eye, loosen up your artwork and explore new ways of working with colour, pattern and texture? In this workshop we “paint with paper”, using translucent, textured and printed paper pieces to create expressive collage artworks that are inspired by your own photos and/or prior landscape or cityscape paintings.
Cathy will demonstrate how to “springboard” from your source material with quick tonal thumbnail sketches, identify key composition elements, select effective colours and papers and ultimately create your own collage landscapes on paper. With many years of experience as an art teacher and artist, Cathy weaves colour theory, elements and principles of art and a broad knowledge of materials into her teaching, as needed for artists of all levels.
This collage workshop is an opportunity to explore expressive and/or abstracted landscape creation as well as the wide possibilities of collage – either on its own, incorporated into mixed media artwork or as studies for future paintings.
Materials List:
- Your own source photos of 4+ landscapes, cityscapes or interiors. Choose source photos with interesting details, depth and colour contrasts.
- 4 x A4 size (approx 21 x 30cm) heavy watercolour paper (300gsm or thicker)
- Selection of coloured and patterned translucent rice/tissue papers in a range of colours, preferably acid free (archival). I suggest a red, a light and a strong blue, bright green and a warm and cool (lemon) yellow if possible – The Art Scene & other art stores stock a good acid free range, but wrapping tissues from the newsagent are fine to use for workshop)
- Selection of textured and/or patterned opaque coloured papers, preferably acid free – from Art Scene etc for archival but wrapping paper is fine to use for workshop
- Mod Podge Matte glue (This one’s my favourite and is worth buying: easy to handle, dries quickly to clear and is available from Art Scene etc. PVA or other brush-on liquid glue that dries clear is ok too.)
- 2 Taklon or other synthetic brushes for gluing (size 10-12 round with good point and a flat inch-wide brush for broad gluing)
- Newspaper and/or magazine (to use on the artwork and/or when gluing)
- Scissors – large
- Ruler
- Water pot
- Chux/towel for brush and hand cleaning
