David Fairbairn conducted a one day workshop on Self Portraits on 17th October 2015
Portraiture – “Face To Face” (Drawing & Mixed Media)
Workshop Report: Self Portrait
David challenged us all and stretched our drawing skills – firstly drawing a self portrait without a mirror but drawing by touch, to capture more depth in our drawings. We also used collage techniques to change an ‘iconic’ full face portrait into one with more animation and perspective, which was an interesting exercise. After lunch we proceeded to capture a self portrait building on the techniques of the morning. A challenging and enjoyable day – Thanks David!
Workshop Overview
This workshop is designed to extend your ideas & skills to make a more emotive & individual response to portraiture.
Preferably you will work from yourself as the model. Bring a mirror & plenty of resource material (photos or drawings of yourself) to the class. However some students may prefer to work from other people such as family members etc. so will need to bring appropriate material.
You will make detailed preliminary studies that will provide the starting point for development into a major drawing. You will be shown a range of exciting ways to build & layer images through exploration of a variety of mixed media that investigates pose, character, personality and mood.
