Student work from an inspiring day
Twelve of us had a wonderful Saturday learning how to paint “trawlers”. Marijke was an inspiring and dedicated teacher, constantly checking around with each of us. We started by scrubbing in the background, “getting the colour right (desaturate the background), then getting one shape correct and relating all other shapes to that, watching angles and proportions. We made the water colourful, use long strokes and worked in the reflections. Some of Marijke’s insights include:
“We paint boats, so we can paint reflections”
“Rigging is difficult, but not when analysed”
“Strengthen the lights, last.”
“Mantra. Dark against light, light against dark.”
Marijke also gave us a lesson on contour drawing, the aim being to travel a line from one side to the other, outlining the subject, working slowly and concentrating. We all enjoyed a lovely day relaxing and enjoyable, with a memorable lady.
