Brandt Lewis conducted a workshop on Pastels at West Lindfield.

Following in the technique pioneered by Degas, Brandt
Lewis showed us how to start our pastel painting with a
tonal charcoal drawing, subsequently adding the pastel
colour. He also demonstrated how to make a pastel
crayon. We beavered away at our pastel pictures during
the day, all the time benefiting from Brandt’s great tips and
supportive comments. I think we produced some mighty
fine results! Thanks Brandt.

Course Detail and Materials

At our Workshop

Brandt will introduce us to the delights of chalk pastels; their immediacy, adaptability and ease of use.  Use on white or coloured papers, multi-layered, or used over underpainting, pastels offer all the applications of paint without the clean up bother and drying times.

Brandt will use still life and photos as subjects, including portraits, with a range of pastel tecStep Two pastel on paper 76 x 110 cmhniques applied to each, allowing for time.

After an introduction to materials and a demonstration, we will use portrait photos to try tonal studies using ‘a trois couleurs’ and/or black and white on toned paper – mixing blending, layering and allowing the paper to work for you.

We will also use an underpainting to colour over developing a multi-coloured pastel painting from still-life or photos.
